A Seminar on Emmanuel Levinas


An opportunity to reflect on and deepen our understanding of the work of Emmanuel Levinas, a French Jewish philosopher whose family perished in the Holocaust. He made responsibility for “the other” the foundation of his work. The Seminar will explore the various dimensions of the relationship between myself, the other, and God and the challenges this poses for ethics and religion.


The seminar will be led by Dr Steve Innes and Dr Margie Tolstoy
Dr Steve Innes is the scholar in residence for the Council of Christians and Jews
Dr Margie Tolstoy taught Christian responses to the Holocaust at Cambridge University for over thirty years.

They will introduce us to elements of his thought such as:

    Knowing God through the other
    Useless Suffering
    The Relation of Love and Justice


When: Friday 24th – Saturday 25th August 2018
Where: Conforti Institute, Calder Avenue, Coatbridge, ML5 4JS

The seminar will begin on the Friday evening and end with dinner on the Saturday evening


The cost is being subsidised by the Xaverian Missionaries. The reduced rate is £50 for Residential & £25 for Non-residential.
 
Registration for both residential and non - residential participation is essential. Payment can be made by card or cash on arrival.
