Scotland remembers Hiroshima

21 events will take place across Scotland to mark the 70th anniversary of the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by atomic bombs. They will be held in Aberdeen, Anstruther, Ayr, Coatbridge, Dunbar, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Helensburgh, Irvine, Kilmarnock, Paisley, Rutherglen and Stirling.  (From Scottish CND)

Aberdeen 6 August 8.30 pm. Fisherman's Hut, River Dee. Peace songs, poetry and short contributions from trade unions, community & faith groups, civic leaders and a speaker from the Japanese community.  We will then release 200 peace lanterns on the River Dee to commemorate the 200,000 men, women and children who died. Anstruther Scotland's Secret Bunker will be marking the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing with showings of the The War Game in their cinema at 11.30 am on Thursday 6th, Friday 7th, Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th August. There is a charge for entry to the Secret Bunker.

Coatbridge  6 August, 12 noon. Hiroshima remembrance event at the Peace Garden, Drumpellier park, Coatbridge.

Dunbar  6 August, 11 am. There will be a Hiroshima vigil at the peace pole in the grounds of St Ann's Episcopal Church, West Port, Dunbar.  9 August 12.45 pm. There will be a Nagasaki vigil at the peace pole in the grounds of St Ann's Episcopal Church, West Port, Dunbar.

Dundee  6 August Meet at 8.30 pm at the bottom of the Law for a march to the top of the Law where there will be a gathering to remember Hiroshima with a range of speakers. Organised by Dundee CND. 9 August 11 am There will be a Nagasaki vigil on top of Dundee Law. Organised by Dundee CND.

Edinburgh  6 August 12 noon  Floating paper lanterns on the pond outside the Scottish Parliament. Organised by Edinbugh CND. The film is by Glasgow-based artist Lin Li and is a portrait of Brian Quail, who is a leading campaigner against nuclear weapons in Scotland.   6-9 August Four day fast to remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
