Event in Glasgow
On October 17 1987, 100,000 people from around the world gathered together in Paris to bear witness to people living in poverty throughout the world.  The event was organised by the international movement ATD Fourth World and during it a large commemorative stone was unveiled, part of which reads, 'Wherever men and women are condemned to live in poverty, human rights are violated.  It is our solemn duty to come together to ensure that these rights are respected'.

The intention of the stone was to create a permanent marker to remember what poverty does to people.   It was noted that few monuments ever mark our landscape in honour of people in poverty and their courage. Since then events have taken place on October 17 around the world, and in 1992 the United Nations declared the day the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty .  Since 1992 people have met in George Square Glasgow where and in 1999 a commemorative stone was also laid. The day is about people in poverty speaking out, and others to stand alongside and listen to them.   This year October 17 is a Saturday and we meet in George Square from 12 - 1pm to hear stories, share music and artwork and to say together that poverty is not acceptable and not inevitable.  Please join us.
