Incidents of Serious Self-Harm in Removal Centres up 54%

Self-Harm in Immigration Detention 1st Quarter 2008 Jan/Feb/Mar

There were 48 incidents of Self-Harm requiring medical treatment in Jan/Feb/Mar 2008 this is an increase of 54% on the last quarter of 2007 Oct/Nov/Dec during which time there were 31 incidents.

Oakington IRC, which had only 6 incidents of Self-Harm requiring medical treatment in the whole of 2007, had 9 incidents of serious self-harm in the first 3 months of 2008.

Dover IRC suffered an alarming increase of 80% increase in Self-Harm requiring medical treatment in the 1st Quarter of 2008 compared to the last Quarter of 2007 and a 100% increase on the same period last year.

361 Individuals were put on Formal Self-Harm at Risk in Jan/Feb/Mar 2008 a 28% increase on the last quarter of 2007 Oct/Nov/Dec during which time there were 282 incidents.
