The Home Office has put out a consultation reforming support for failed asylum seekers and 'illegal migrants'. Contrary to the media reporting which has so far focused on families with children, it appears that migrants in detention are one of the key targets of these cuts. The proposal is to abolish support under Section 4(1) of the 1999 Act, which is the provision that allows people in detention to access bail addresses.
This will inevitably be overshadowed by the appalling proposals to make children street homeless. And it is important that what it means for many people in detention if s4(1) is abolished is spelled out.
So it will be crucial that we respond to the consultation, but also lobby our parliamentarian supporters and influential spokespeople to oppose the changes. We can encourage MPs to discuss them in the back-bench business debate - the inquiry report recommended the Swedish model of alternatives to detention that engage migrants to resolve their cases, which is the antithesis to the crude approach of making people destitute. Please note that the consultation deadline is 9 September.
