Mentawai: rainforests, not biomass for electricity!

The Mentawai Islands of Indonesia are small slices of paradise in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Sumatra. Their lush rainforests are home to several primate species found nowhere else in the world. The indigenous people of Mentawai have maintained their ancestral culture and their deep, spiritual relationship to the forest at its heart.
But unless we act, that may soon be gone forever: a biomass company wants to clear the rainforests on Siberut, the largest of the Mentawai Islands, to make way for a 20,000-hectare biomass plantation. The wood harvested on the plantation will serve as fuel for electricity generation.
The indigenous people of Siberut are resisting the project. They want to preserve their forests and have asked for our support. Please sign our petition to the Indonesian forestry ministry calling for the plan to be scrapped. Read more and take action here
