Adults Entering/Leaning Detention. In the year ending June 2012, 28,242 people entered detention, an increase of 7% compared with the previous year (26,301). Over the same period there was an increase of 5% in those leaving detention (from 26,411 to 27,852). Of the 27,852 leaving detention, 62% were removed from the UK [38% returned to the community].
As of the end of June 2012, 2,993 people were in detention. This was slightly lower than the peak of 3,034 as at the end of March 2012, which is the highest number recorded since publication of the data began in 2001.
Q2: 7,006 people entered detention - 5,924 men / 1,082 women
Q2: Of those leaving detention, 4,275 were removed from the UK and 2,753 (39.17%) returned to the community.
Of those leaving detention during the second quarter of 2012 (7,028), 4,503 (64%) had been in detention for less than 29 days, 1,264 (18%) for between 29 days and two months and 820 (12%) for between two and four months. Of the 441 (6%) remaining, 52 had been in detention for between one and two years and 24 for two years or longer.

Children Entering/Leaning Detention
There were 60 children entering detention in the second quarter of 2012. This followed falls from a peak in the third quarter of 2009 of 322, down to a low point of 19 in the first quarter of 2011, after which the numbers have increased.
Of the 60 children leaving detention in the second quarter of 2012, 29 were removed from the UK and 31 were granted temporary admission/release. Of those leaving detention, three children were detained for longer than 15 days.
Of those entering detention in the second quarter of 2012, 37 were detained in Cedars, compared with 17 at Tinsley House and the remaining six at other immigration removal centres or short term holding facilities.
