Pope Francis recently declared September 1 as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. He said,  “The annual World Day of prayer for the Care of Creation offers to individual believers and to the community a precious opportunity to renew our personal participation in this vocation as custodians of creation, raising to God our thanks for the marvellous works that He has entrusted to our care, invoking his help for the protection of creation and his mercy for the sins committed against the world in which we live.”

Tell the Scottish Government to finish with fossil fuels

Rich countries like ours have grown wealthy through our use of cheap, fossil fuel energy. But in doing that, we’ve pushed the planet to the brink of irreversible climate change. Lobbying by big business, and an economic system that puts profit before people and the planet, are making the problem worse.

Taking action in court is a daunting prospect that most of us probably hope we never have to do. But sometimes, it’s the right thing to do, or even the only option left in order to ensure a great wrong is put right.  This is as true of important environmental issues like fighting climate change, tackling pollution, protecting rare wildlife and habitats as it is in any walk of life. The difference is, the environment can’t go to court by itself – it depends on courageous citizens to take legal action on its behalf.

Most people put plastic bags in the trash immediately, but even so, around eight billion are carelessly discarded in the EU every year, leaving them to litter the countryside and waters for centuries to come.

Scotland misses second climate target
Responding the news that the 2011 emission target was missed, Dr Sam Gardner of coalition Stop Climate Chaos Scotland (SCCS) said: "Today's news of a second missed target is very disappointing. We recognise that this is due in part to complicated changes on how we count our emissions, but the headline of another missed target strongly underlines the need for a much tougher climate action plan, expected out later this month,  that will drive down emissions year on year and give confidence that future targets can be met.  “With increasingly tougher targets in the future, Ministers must up their game if Scotland is to deliver on climate justice and is to reap the rewards of the transition to a low carbon future." Orangutans – victims of "sustainable" palm oil
Palm oil is a major threat to the rainforests. The latest case: In Borneo, several starving orangutans have been rescued after their forest homes were clear-cut for a palm oil plantation. The rainforest was bulldozed by BGA, a member of the RSPO – the organization issuing the label for sustainable palm oil. Sign the petition to call for a stop to rainforest destruction and palm oil imports – and please also spread the word:

Switch Off Your Lights for the Future of Our Planet
WWF’s Earth Hour is a unique annual phenomenon that focuses the world’s attention on our amazing planet, and how we need to protect it. At 8.30pm on 23 March hundreds of millions of people will turn off their lights for one hour, on the same night, all across the world in a huge, symbolic show of support. For 2013 as we all switch off our lights, we want the focus to be on the kind of energy we use. Because to create a better future for our planet we need to move away from dirty fossil fuels and onto clean green renewable energy which works with the awesome power of nature, not against it.

Help influence Government plans on climate change
On the 29th January, the Scottish Government published its revised plans on climate change.  Stop Climate Chaos Scotland is deeply concerned about the plans, which do not represent a credible package of measures to help Scotland reduce emissions and meet the targets set under the Scottish Climate Change Act. Now is a crucial time for MSPs to hear more from their constituents as the plans are being scrutinised, and may be improved, by Parliament.  Could you visit your MSP in your constituency - or write them a letter on this subject - in the next three weeks?

Seven indigenous tribes in the Amazon region are currently endangered by the Ecuadorian government’s plans to sell off their ancestral land to oil companies. This would lead to the destruction and exploitation of three million hectares of rainforest and tribal lands. The indigenous peoples are resisting the government’s plans by denying the oil industry access to their lands and protesting President Rafael Correa’s attempts to violate their rights and disrupt their unity. Please sign Rainforest Rescue's petition to the Ecuadorian government. The first oil exploration permits are due to be awarded on the 28th of November.

Climate change talk must be backed by action
Tom Ballantine, Chair of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland, uses a platform article to encourage the Scottish Government to ‘get their act together’ and start taking action to meet important climate change targets. The piece also promotes a mass lobby event on 25th October which will bring people from across the country face-to-face with their MSPs. They will demand that the Climate change (Scotland) Act be backed up by action and emissions reduction targets met.

From Climate Act to Climate Action

Please join us on Thursday 25 October to lobby the Scottish Parliament. Four years ago, Stop Climate Chaos Scotland and thousands of their supporters lobbied hard for strong legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Scotland.  To their delight, in 2009 the Scottish Parliament passed the world’s strongest climate legislation: The Scottish Climate Change Act. However, the Scottish Government has failed to meet it’s very first (and not particularly challenging) target to reduce emissions under the Act.

Rainforest Rescue: Stop IKEA logging old-growth forests in Russia
The furniture giant IKEA is clear-cutting Russian woods – including many old-growth forests. Centuries-old trees are felled and the sensible soils are destroyed by the heavy harvester vehicles. Such is by no means "responsible forestry", which Ikea promises its customers. Please support the protests of Swedish and Russian environmentalists by signing this action alert. Ask IKEA to end the clear-cut of natural forests immediately.

Scottish Climate Justice Fund shows the way forward

The announcement today of the Scottish Government's Climate Justice Fund was welcomed by the Stop Climate Chaos Scotland coalition. The new fund to help people living in some of the world's poorest countries affected by the changing climate, such as more frequent and severe droughts and floods, will be a good example to bring to the Rio+20 summit in June of how the rich world can can face up to its historic responsibility for climate change and its substantial negative impact on many of the world’s poorest people.

Please help the Ngobe protect their rainforest
The Ngobe Indian's rainforest in Panama is a natural paradise for amphibians and reptiles. Now a part of it could be drowned in an artificial lake which is supposed to produce so-called clean energy, endangering the extremely rare Tabasara Rain Frog which is only found in the affected area. The Ngobe Indians are outraged by the plans for the Barro Blanco dam and are asking for help. The project is financed by three international development banks. Please ask the banks to stop their financial support for the dam and ensure the protection of the rainforest and the Tabasara Rain Frog.

Many of Brazil's Awá are still uncontacted, and they are running for their lives. A wave of illegal loggers, settlers and ranchers have invaded their lands, and time is running out. A major new campaign is being launched to save the Awá, and your help is needed. ‘One man has the power to stop the loggers: Brazil’s Minister of Justice. But it’s just not his priority. Let’s push it up his list.’ Please watch the new film, and take a few seconds to send a message to Brazil's Minister of Justice: he can send in the federal police to catch the loggers, and keep them out for good.

Mexico: Send an email to protect the Purépecha from criminal loggers
Eight indigenous people were brutally murdered by criminal loggers - simply because they were trying to protect their forest. A staggering 80 percent of the trees and their livelihood have been cleared by illegal loggers. However, so far police has failed to start investigations.
Please demand the protection of the Purépecha and their forest. (Rainforest Rescue)

Stop Climate Chaos Scotland - Rio Connection campaign

In June this year, world leaders will come together in Rio de Janeiro, to plan how countries across the world can reduce poverty while ensuring a safer future for our planet.  Since the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, climate change, environmental concerns and social justice have moved up the political agenda. We've seen huge achievements because people like you demanded action from our governments.  But there's still a long way to go, so let’s make sure our MSPs stay focused on how we can create a sustainable country as part of a sustainable world.  Join the Rio Connection, sign up to join an event near you and tell your MSP how much this matters to you.

Help keep tar sands out of Europe
Email Action

Tar sands produce 3-5 times the carbon emissions associated with crude oil production, bad news for a low carbon economy. Yet the UK Government, under pressure from Canada which produces most of the world’s tar sands, is refusing to support an EU proposal that would effectively ban tar sands from European import. We still have a chance to reverse our government’s position before the vote on 23 February. Tell Norman Baker and Nick Clegg there is no place for dirty oil in a green European Union!

Send a message to the UN climate talks: no new debt for the world’s poorest countries
Delegates from 200 countries will meet in South Africa from November 28 to try to reach agreement on global emissions cuts and funding for developing countries to adapt to climate change. The Scottish government has been lobbyed to do the right thing by funding its own policies to reduce climate change emissions. Help to put pressure on Scottish climate change minister Stewart Stevenson to use his influence in South Africa to ensure that funding for developing countries to adapt to climate change is given to them as grants not loans. Lending to countries that are already heavily in debt will only drive them further into poverty.  Please email Stewart Stevenson now.

Green MSP Alison Johnstone has urged the Scottish Parliament to back calls from Scottish Environment LINK for a strong network of Marine Protected Areas using the powers set out in the Marine Act passed at Holyrood in 2010. The call came on the third annual UN-recognised World Oceans Day, which this year recognises the particular contribution young people make to protecting our seas.

British Government and Human Rights: Carbon offset plans linked to murders in
Take Action
A Honduran palm oil company is looking for funds from the carbon markets even though they have been implicated in 16-25 assassinations of peasants in 2010 alone. During the first three months of this year, they have been linked again to violent attacks and kidnapping. Unless the British Government stops the sale of those carbon credits, which they can do, the company will further increase their profits and thus be able to pay even more armed paramilitaries and to continue oppressing the peasant communities that are reclaiming lands which are legally theirs

Looking for an interesting way to talk to your future politicians. Then visit a SCCS Climate Café. This an informal and engaging way to ask your parliamentary candidates how they plan to tackle climate change issues if they are elected in the Scottish elections this May. Climate cafés are based on the concept of “speed dating”. With a small group of people, you’ll get ten or fifteen minutes to ask your candidate questions before a bell rings and you move to another table and another candidate. Tea and coffee will be provided and you’ll receive an information pack beforehand explaining the key issues and how the event will work. This event is organised by the Stop Climate Chaos Scotland. A few good reasons why we should abandon nuclear energy for good
Consensus is growing that we must reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Proponents of nuclear energy say nuclear is the best alternative. But nuclear energy is neither clean nor green. Each step in the nuclear chain poses hazards to the environment and human health.
