Plus new 'End Hunger Fast' campaign launched
Last year, half a million people in the UK depended on emergency food aid. The single most common reason for people to need food aid is that their benefits have been changed, delayed or stopped. The explosion in food poverty and the use of food banks is a national disgrace. It undermines the UK's commitment to ensuring all its citizens have access to food - one of the most basic human rights.
Help us tackle the scandal of food poverty visit 'Walking the Breadline' to find out more and find out how to get involved. We urgently need action to stop our benefits system making people destitute. First, we need a national investigation into how this is happening. Half a million people used food banks in the last year. Charitable support programmes are rapidly expanding but nonetheless a quarter of families are shrinking portion sizes. 5,500 people were admitted to hospital for malnutrition last year.
