The Scottish Bishops' Conference have released a statement urging a 'sincere search for peace' following the recent imprisonment and expulsion of clergy and citizens by the government in Nicaragua.

The Bishops of Scotland share the concerns expressed by many throughout the world of the serious violation of the rule of law that is taking place in Nicaragua. We condemn the unjust sentencing of Bishop Rolando Alvares to 26 years imprisonment, the imprisonment of clergy and the expulsion of 222 citizens. At the same time, we call on the Nicaraguan authorities to listen to the voice of the people and to work towards a peaceful transition in a country that has been experiencing five years of conflict. We call for the release of political prisoners and the restoration of dialogue that can lead to a just social peace. We join with Pope Francis in praying “for all those who suffer in that dear nation”, asking the Lord “to open the hearts of political leaders and all citizens to the sincere search for peace that comes from truth, justice, freedom and love”.

Statement Ends.
